Thousands Protest Detentions of Turkish Journalists

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) condemned an alleged attack at the Supreme Court premises on former vice chairman of the Pakistan Bar Council, Raza Kazim and his son Ali Raza Kazim.

The LHCBA, in condemnation of the incident, adopted two resolutions moved by bar members Chaudhry Jawad Zafar and Malik Muhammad Awan in its general house meeting. The house alleged that Raza and his son Ali, while appearing as counsel for the state TV before the SC had faced an alleged assault by high-ups of a private TV channel. The house passed both the resolutions unanimously and condemned the alleged aggression by members of a media group against the lawyers’ leader and son.

The house demanded the incident to be investigated and action be taken against the media group that mishandled Kazim, allegedly in order to stop him from appearing from the state TV’s side against the private channel.

LHCBA President, Asghar Ali Gill, in his address termed the incident an insult of the entire lawyers’ community and deplored that nowadays it was a media practice to use the word ‘wuqla gardi’ for lawyers. This was a matter of concern for the legal community, Ashgar said.

He said the lawyers had a history of struggle from the creation of Pakistan to the ouster of military dictator Pervez Musharraf and the media should not engage itself in negative propaganda against the legal community. The lawyers have always welcomed healthy criticism but the blackcoats should not be made target on such issues, he reiterated.

He denounced that the private TV channel in its programmes was doing “character assassination of lawyers since a long time and now the owners and members of the media group have started physical attacks on senior lawyers that too on the bar premises by crossing all moral limits”. Such incidents didn’t serve the interests of the people and the country, he added. LHCBA Secretary, Arshad Malik Awam, senior lawyer Dr A Basit and Mian Aman Ullah also spoke on the occasion and condemned the incident.Staff Report
