ISLAMABAD; March 16: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has expressed concern over injuries caused to a cameraman of a private TV channel, Fayyaz Qamar, on the premises of Punjab Assembly on Monday as a stray bullet hit him while he was sitting in an area designated for journalists.
According to details, Qamar, 26, was sitting with other media persons in the area specified for media during the assembly session when a stray bullet hit him in the back. He was rushed to Ganga Ram Hospital where he was said to be out of danger.
An FIR has been registered in Qila Gujjar Singh police station under section 324 of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of Punjab Union of Journalists President Rana Mohammad Azeem against an unidentified accused.
Following the incident, many journalists, led by Rana Azeem and Lahore Press Club (LPC) President, Sarmad Bashir, held a protest demonstration on the assembly premises and said that the arrangements made for journalists were poor, and there was no security whatsoever.
The journalists said that this act indicated a security lapse in and around the Punjab Assembly.
The PFUJ said it is very serious incident and injuries to a cameraman in such an important and sensitive place reflects lapse on part of law enforcing agencies which deserves to be given serious thought.
The PFUJ joins the demand of its affiliated PUJ for an immediate inquiry into the incident, and that the accused be brought to justice.
