PFUJ hails appointment of woman as new IFJ general secretary

ISLAMABAD, Mar 24 (APP): The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has hailed the decision of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) for formally declaring appointment of Elisabeth Costa as its new General Secretary and hoped that the incumbent would successfully run the affairs of the IFJ, besides protecting the just cause of media persons throughout the world.
Secretary-General of the PFUJ, Shamsul Islam Naz, said by her appointment to the world’s largest journalist body, a good massage has been given at global level that time has come when women cannot be ignored and that they can lead with their foresightedness and vision, said a press release received here on Thursday.
The PFUJ considers it very encouraging and it was a good change that for the first time in the history of the IFJ its General Secretary was made outside Europe and it is also the first time that the IFJ is led by a woman.
He said, “Elisabeth Costa is a veteran campaigner for union rights and press freedom in Latin America and has been a leading force for international solidarity in the Brazilian Federation of Journalists’ Associations (FENAJ) who emerged as unanimous choice from a strong field of candidates who were interviewed in Brussels last month”.
The PFUJ expects that with her induction would be a good sign for the ignored and depressed journalists of the world, in general, and in Pakistan in Asia, in particular, and it would encourage women to come forward in the field of journalism.
“We hope that Elisabeth will fully meet the challenges of in-security to media persons in Middle East and South Ashia who are now-a-days suffering to a greater extent owing to hostile violent working environment, Shams said
