UCLA student forced to leave after reaction to Anti-Asian rant

By Rebecca Scott

After having her anti-Asian “Learn American Manners” video go viral on YouTube, only six days ago, Alexandra Wallace has decided to withdraw from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) due to countless death threats.

The student claims she was "trying to produce a humorous YouTube video” instead she has produced a disgustingly offensive and racist video stereotyping the entire Asian culture. The irony is she refers to herself as a “polite, nice American girl”.

What ‘polite’ person could possibly be so insulting and insensitive? No only does she insult other cultures but she inconsiderately includes Japan’s Tsunami tragedy in her disgraceful clip.

Thankfully others like “Jimmy” have a sense of humour, reflected in his response to the clip where he rebuts to the insults through a creative song. It seems the goal of a humorous YouTube Video was achieved, though not by Alexandra.

Jimmy’s video has gained the views of over 1,500,000 people and close to 40,000 likes. It is disturbing to think that in a country that prides itself on being multicultural and a world leader there are still many others like Alexandra. Let the vast amount of negative comments about this video be a lesson to people that hurtful stereotypes like these are in no way acceptable or “humourous” as Alexandra describes.

Have you seen the video? Was the situation so dire she really needed to leave the school and what does this say about students and their use of social media? think, reflect and remember... disqus!
