Imphal, March 31 2011: A one day workshop on crime against women was held today in the conference hall of the Centre for Social Development under the aegis of Women Action for Development (WAD).

Speaking the workshop, senior journalist Irengbam Arun said that said that the State Commission for Women was set up just for name sake under an order from the Government of India.

Crimes against women were committed since the past.

But in the contemporary period, activities on women issues and acts of monitoring crimes have rose up sharply.

This has led to more and more exposure of crimes committed against women, Arun said.

However, documentation of crimes against women in Manipur is still not satisfactory.

He highlighted the importance of documenting profiles of women victims as well as the accused.

Such profiling would help in identifying the age, economic condition and educational status of women where they are most vulnerable.

Imphal correspondent of the Telegraph, Khelen Thokchom emphasised on the need to open police cells for tackling violence and crime committed against women at all district police headquarters, if not at all police stations.

Observing that most women victims did not get justice, Khelen noted that most of the women victims did not have faith in police.

This often led to loss of evidence.

WAD secretary Subita Mangshatabam quoting Imphal based newspapers said that Manipur witnessed 44 cases of violence against women between January and March this year.
